Jan. 21, 1773: Poet Phillis Wheatley, born a slave in 1754, was freed and her first book of poetry, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral, was published.

  1. Phillis Wheatley’s book of poems was not published until September, 1773. She was freed sometime between September 20 and late October of that year following her return from touring England for six weeks. You can see a signed first edition of her iconic book at http://www.africanamericancollection.com under the Literature category. I also have the only handwritten poem privately owned: “Ocean”, written in Sept. 1773 as well. Hope this helps! Everyone especially students of all ages should know her story!
