Spike lee Gives Ava DuVernay Advice on Oscar Snub: ‘F**k ’em’

ava duvernay, spike lee,

*Last Thursday the 2015 Academy Award nominations were announced and the Oscars quickly drew criticism for pretty much shutting out people of color.

Black Twitter created the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite while blasting the Academy Awards for not nominating anyone of color — specifically the obvious “Selma.”

Nevertheless, Spike Lee has some words of advice about director Ava Duvernay and lead actor David Oyelowo‘s snubs, according to the Daily Beast.

“That doesn’t diminish the film,” Lee said beforec comparing the relevance of the 1990 Oscar Award-winning film, “Driving Miss Daisy and his 1990 Oscar-nominated motion picture, “Do The Right Thing.”

“Nobody’s talking about motherf*ckin’ ‘Driving Miss Daisy.’ That film is not being taught in film schools all across the world like ‘Do the Right Thing’ is,” he added.

He continued with, “nobody’s discussing Driving Miss Motherf*ckin’ Daisy. So if I saw Ava today I’d say, ‘You know what? F*ck ’em. You made a very good film, so feel good about that and start working on the next one.”

Lee is behind some of the most critically-acclaimed and significant films of the last 25-plus years, but he has yet to receive an Oscar nomination for his work.

“Anyone who thinks this year was gonna be like last year is retarded,” he said. “There were a lot of black folks up there with 12 Years a Slave, Steve [McQueen], Lupita [Nyong’o], Pharrell. It’s in cycles of every 10 years. Once every 10 years or so I get calls from journalists about how people are finally accepting black films.”

  1. SPIKE LEE MY THOUGHTS ARE THE EXACTLY THE SAME FUCK THEM! AVA DUVERNAY SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR BEST DIRECTOR AND DAVID OYELOWO ACTING SKILLS WERE OUTSTANDING AS MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAVID SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOMINATED FOR BEST LEAD ACTOR. LOVE THE SONG COMMON AND JOHN LEGEND WROTE, MAYBE IT WILL GET BEST SONG AT THE OSCAR’S THEY HAVE TWO AWARDS FOR THEIR SONG ALREADY GOLDEN GLOBE’S AND CRITICS CHOICE AWARD I SEEN BLACK ACTORS MAKE IT ALL THE WAY TO THE SAG AWARDS WINNING THEN GET TO THE OSCAR’S AND LOSE TOO WHO MERYL STREEP! I WILL NOT BE WATCHING THE OSCAR’S# FUCK THEM!

  2. Ms. DuVernay’s work speaks for itself. It is so worthy of Oscar it isn’t funny. But in the hearts of many, she’s already won for best director, and best picture! Statue’s be damned…

Like Spike said, start working on your next masterpiece. Ms. DuVernay’s talent is unlimited!

Pay no attention to those creeps behind the curtain…

  3. Disgusting language. He should know how to string together a sentence without sounding like he lives in a gutter. I can’t even take him seriously.

  4. Exactly why a lot of people, myself included, can’t stand the likes of Spike Lee, the movies he gets involved in or his racist/bigoted agenda. His message and his motivations are clear because he’s a racist/bigot. He doesn’t care about the quality of the performance by a fellow actress or actor, he just cares about whether they’re black and the quantity of blacks involved in a performance on screen or on TV. The arts isn’t about color, it’s about art and talent. 90% of actors and actresses are out of work at any given time in the industry 365 days a year……..that’s blacks, whites, latino’s etc. Racists like Spike Lee don’t tell you that though. And Spike Lee and Oprah Winfrey don’t tell you how they’ll hire a black actor or actress over a white one do they. So, reverse discrimination is ok for them….correct Spike? They spew out how it’s about how “whitey” got the better deal or nomination. Progress will never be made with an attitude like that. Quite frankly, Selma was a good film but not a great film. It’s an old story that could be told one way…… truthfully and in this case, truthfully was a little boring. As far as a best actor nomination…… compared to the others nominated, no way he should have been on the list. And that performance didn’t even come close to anything Denzel or Morgan has ever done even on screen on their worst acting day. Put more movies on the screen like 12 Years A Slave, Shawshank Redemption and the like, and if nominations don’t happen, then you’ll have something to complain about. Until that happens, hey Spike…..STF UP!
