Rashad’s ‘Forget those Women’ Cosby Defense Quote Brings Backlash

Phylicia-Rashad*After defending Bill Cosby, over sexual misconduct accusations, the comedian’s former TV wife Phylicia Rashad set the record straight on what she said was “a misquote” from an interview she recently gave.

During an appearance Wednesday on “ABC World News Tonight With David Muir,” Rashad responded to a question regarding a quote that was attributed to her. According to reports, Rashad reportedly said, “Forget those women,” regarding women who have made sexual assault and drugging allegations against Cosby.

“That was a misquote, and that is not what I said,” Rashad told ABC’s Linsey Davis. “What I said is that this is not about the women. This is about something else. This is about the obliteration of a legacy.”

As for who would want to obliterate Cosby’s legacy, Rashad could not offer anything solid. During the “World News Tonight” interview, the actress slammed the media, saying, “What has happened is declaration in the media of guilt without proof.”

When Cosby’s allegations were brought up, Rashad said, “I can’t even speak to those things, and don’t even want to.”

Rashad’s chat with Davis comes days after an interview she did that was published on Showbiz 411 on Tuesday. The quote that triggered the backlash came as Rashad defended Cosby while seemingly dismissing his accusers.

“Forget these women,” Rashad was quoted as telling reporter Roger Friedman. “What you’re seeing is the destruction of a legacy. And I think it’s orchestrated. I don’t know why or who’s doing it, but it’s the legacy. And it’s a legacy that is so important to the culture.”

Rashad, who is best known for playing Clair Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” also starred with Cosby as Ruth Lucas on the CBS show “Cosby” from 1996 to 2000.

Those criticizing Rashad include director/producer/writer Judd Apatow, who believed her defense of Cosby was financially motivated.

“She is worried about her SAG residuals disappearing if they are heard in court. Shameful,” Apatow tweeted to the CEO and editor in chief of TheWrap.com.
