KNOW YO' DOUGH
Financial advisor George Thompson talks on new UL program.
*Recently the National Urban League and Phillip Morris Companies
announced a partnership to create and implement Know Your Money,
a multi-market program designed to strengthen the economic
foundation of African American communities. We spoke
to financial advisor, author and lecturer on financial empowerment
George Thompson. He enlightened us on the new Know Your
Money program.
"I am president of the Urban League Young Professionals
of Los Angeles and a lecturer for the local chapter of the Know
Your Money program," said Thompson. "The Know Your Money
seminar is an economic empowerment initiative sponsored by the
NUL and Phillip Morris is one of the sponsors. (It) is a national
initiative that goes to five cities throughout the United States:
Los Angeles; Chicago, Houston, Atlanta and Washington, DC.
The national spokesperson is Magic Johnson."
As with all things that are worth going through, the Know
Your Money seminar has several intricate stages to help teach
the attendee about his/her financial practices and how to change
them for the better.
"It begins by going over what your money personality is," said
Thompson. "By going over how your parents dealt with money
and that is a kind of indicator of how you deal with money.
Although sometimes this indicator may not be true. If your parents
were extremely frugal, you may be careless. Or if they spent a lot,
you may be the opposite. Our goal is to figure out how you make
financial decisions and where that knowledge came from. From
there we go into budgeting, personal balance sheets to explain
cash management, and during the second session we give you
all three of your credit reports from the three top credit agencies
and a credit score. From there we explain to you how to improve
your credit score. Your income dictates what kind of home you
get, but your interest rate is dictated by what your credit score
is. We explain that and, in the third session, we go through
investments. Like what stocks, bonds, mutual funds and
pension plans are. Everything involved in investments.
We also have a graduation that day."
One persistent stereotype regarding African Americans and
money is an alleged ignorance or indifference towards many
matters concerning finances. We asked Thompson his
opinion on that assumption.
"Before I jump on African Americans, first I want to say,
nationally, white, black, everybody, we have the lowest savings
rate of all other industrialized countries. That is not very good.
From me going around doing seminars, the biggest problem
I see with African Americans is, not only don't we save, but
we spend our money in ways that are not conducive to building
wealth. Putting rims on a car does not increase your wealth.
Some people have a cell phone AND a two-way. This is called
Know Your Money. A lot of us don't know our money because
we don't even have it in our hand long enough. We live hand
to mouth. The last I heard ... 70 to 80 percent of Americans,
if forced to go more than two weeks without a check, would
be in big trouble."
Big trouble indeed (as we mark the next pay day while
counting change for cell bills). A trait that is prevalent amongst
African Americans is the ability to make a dollar out of 15 cents.
We find a way to make something from nothing. While this trait
has helped us weather many storms, Thompson says it is this
very mentality that becomes a hindrance once money is in hand.
"That's why the first session is so important," said Thompson.
"Some people think that they have not had anything all their lives.
That's why, when they get money, they always go back to that
because that's where they think they should be. A famous boxer
was on TV the other day and he said he spends all his money
because he's always two punches away from a 20 million dollar
pay off. But that's a mental thing. There's going to be a day when
he can't throw punches anymore. We have that mentality of we can
always make it, we can keep surviving. We want to move people from
survivorship to where they're (really)OK. If you lose your job can you
go three or six months without getting kicked out of your place?
It's a critical time and that's why this is so important."
The Know Your Money program, which includes a three-class
curriculum taught by business and academic experts over a 12-week
period will provide African Americans between the ages of 21 and 35
with more comprehensive understanding of personal money

CHRIS WEBBER RESPONDS TO INDICTMENT
Sacramento King is not feeling very royal after charges of lying to grand jury, which he denies.
*Chris Webber is yet another in a long line of African Americans
to be indicted this year, but, unlike most of the other guys, he's
an NBA superstar ... so we gotta mention it.
The 29 year-old 6-10 all-star forward was indicted Monday
on charges that he lied to a grand jury about his dealings with
a University of Michigan booster who admits lending the all-star
baller $280,000 while he was still a member of the famed
Michigan quintet, "The Fab Five."
He was charged with obstruction of justice and making a false
declaration before a grand jury, according to the FBI and US
Attorney's Office in Detroit. But at a press conference
yesterday, C-Webb proclaimed his innocence.
"I did not lie to the grand jury," Webber read from a statement.
"I tried to help the grand jury as much as I could. I will fight this
case to the end and feel that I will be vindicated."
Former booster Ed Martin pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy
to launder money, admitting he took gambling money, combined
it with other funds and lent it to several players, including
Webber, while they were still amateurs.
Webber's father, Mayce Webber Jr., and his aunt,
Charlene Johnson, were also indicted on the same
charges as Webber. If convicted, Webber could
face up to 5 years for each count.
A TRAIN IS COMIN'
Spoken word to be speak-ed for familes of African American firemen killed during 9-11 attacks.
*For those that need more tour -- so to speak -- there is more

The "Underground Poets Railroad" spoken word tour,
which jumped off last week, features various poets from city
to city & appearances from such hip-hop acts as Doug E.
Fresh, Biz Markie, Professor Griff & Jazzy Jeff.
The tour will make stops in Atlanta, New York
& Washington DC. Proceeds benefit families of the
African American firefighters who died during 9-11.

DreamWorks was wack says singer.
*Dave Hollister is preparing to release his third solo album
through a new label, Motown Records. Due for an October jump
off, "Things In The Game Done Changed" will feature the type
of material we've come to expect from the Chicago-born crooner.
His two previous sets, "Ghetto Hymns" and "Chicago '85"
were released on DreamWorks Records and failed to achieve
platinum status. Hollister told Launch.com that he feels, with
his new deal, a change gon' come.
"Well, I left DreamWorks because. they're wack, you
know what I mean? I'm just a straight shooter, man, so you
know, that's the real reason I left, 'cause they wack, man.
They don't know what to do with R&B music and I ain't got

Net, he was voted Best Male Screen Personality at Britain's

The event took place Tuesday at the Grosvenor House Hotel
in London. It marked the first Black Filmmakers Magazine Film
and Television Awards.
LATIN GRAMMYS SPAWN CD
LP to feature nominees.
*The Latin Recording Academy has enlisted the talents
of the Warner Music Latina group to help promote some of the
year's best Latin artists and music. The result is the 2002
Grammy Nominees CD, set to hit stores this week.
A portion of the net proceeds from the sale of the CD will
benefit the Latin Recording Academy, which provides educational,
cultural, and human services programs to the Latin music community.
The Latin GRAMMY Awards will be broadcast on the CBS from
9 - 11 p.m. (ET/PT) on September 18.

With the new Rockstar Games release, "Grand Theft Auto:

Writer says Crips were after Pac for their own reasons.
*Right about now Los Angeles Times reporter Chuck
Philips may well be the most hated on man to many in Hip-Hop.
During an interview with AllHipHop.com, Philips defended
his story where he alledges Notorious B.I.G. had a hand in
the murder of Tupac Shakur.
Here's a thin slice of the article, written by the site in question
and answer format. We pick up when Philips talks about people
misinterpretting what he wrote to mean that he is accusing Biggie
of ordering Tupac's death.
CP: They (Crips) say they killed [Tupac] for their own
reasons. Biggie was incidental. It wasn’t like Biggie ordered
this up. That’s how everybody is reporting it. If you really read the
story, a series of kind of coincidences and spontaneous events
and, in a sense they went over there to jack Biggie. According
to them [Big said], "Lets kill him [Tupac], let’s kill him." Whether
he was serious, we don’t know. They [The Crips] never took him
seriously and then on this day, they said, "We’re killin’ him so
lets go get some money." And then they just put it to him.
AHH: They were extorting Biggie?
CP: That’s the point I’m trying to make. In their minds, they
didn’t value – the people who did this obviously didn't think of them
[Tupac and Biggie] like everybody else did. They just thought they
were punks, according to who I’ve been talking to. And so they
said, “Let’s get some money out of it.”

"Endgame ..." is said to combine various media.
*Jackie Joyner-Kersee has selected ethicist Michael Josephson
and David Kacyzynski, brother of Unabomber Ted Kacynski, as
panelists for the upcoming (live) PBS special "Endgame:
Ethics and Values in America," set to premiere
on September 18.
The program invites viewers to put themselves in the shoes
of fictional characters forced to make critical decisions with moral,
ethical or social implications.
"Endgame ..." is said to combine the media of dramatic film,
interactivity on the Internet at pbs.org/endgame, sync-to-broadcast
technology, and live television with a studio audience. Viewers are
empowered to confront those gray areas of human experience
where serious moral and ethical choices are made.
GZA ABOUT TO JUMP OFF

*According to reports, the GZA/Genius is preparing to release
his 3rd solo set in November.
Titled "Legend of The Liquid Sword,"
a title of a Karate classic, the project is rumored to be a lot more
like his first.
HipHopDX reports that the CD will feature producers like
RZA, Wu producer Mathematics, Bink (Jay-Z), Jay Wax Garfield
(Cormega), Jaz-O, DJ Muggs from Cypress Hill and GZA himself.
The first single is titled "Knock, Knock" and is produced

September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month,
a national education campaign developed to increase public
awareness about prostate cancer, the importance of early
detection, and available treatment options.
If caught early enough, prostate cancer is curable. African
American men (who are twice as likely to die from the disease)
should begin their testing at 45 years of age.
"Men just don't like to show their rear-ends so they're not
going to go to physicians," said Roland Young, a prostate
cancer survivor and activist. "It is ridiculous! You'll die
with that philosophy," he added.

changed since 9/11, and I actually refuse to sit and relive that
terrible day.
Yes, I am saddened that thousands lost their lives, people lost
husbands; wives; children; etc. But let's celebrate the living, who
is the burn victim that is still in recovery. What about them? What
about the heroes that are still alive? What about people that lost
their jobs, how has their lives changed and what can the
government do to help them?
I don't want to see the towers drop again, not another day
in my life do I want that image in my eyes nor in my head. WE
MUST MOVE ON, NEVER TO FORGET, HOW CAN YOU?
But we are still here, and we still have to function. Our struggle

(09-09-02 EUR. Many people in Texas, including the Texas
NAACP, have been pushing for investigation into this issue
since 1999. John Cornyn is only making this move now because
he is running against Ron Kirk, an African American candidate,
for US Senate. I am glad that some attention is FINALLY
being drawn to this situation but it is sad that it took an
election for Cornyn to do it. This is NOT the type of
