*Alan Keyes, a former presidential candidate, has joined members of his American Independent Party in filing a lawsuit in California that calls for President-elect Barack Obama to prove his U.S. citizenship before receiving the state's electoral votes.

According to the lawsuit filed in California Superior Court in Sacramento, Keys and members of his party are calling on Obama to provide documentary evidence that proves he is a natural born citizen of the United States.

The Obama campaign countered similar accusations early in 2008 by posting Obama's certification of live birth, and saying: "Barack Obama was born in the state of Hawaii in 1961, a native citizen of the United States of America." A copy of this document is available on the Obama Web site in the  "Fight the Smears" section.

Keyes ran against Obama as a Republican for the U.S. Senate seat in Illinois in 2004. Obama won that election to serve his first and only term in the U.S. Senate.
