AFRICANS COMING TO AMERICA: New Report Shows Surge in Immigrants From Motherland.(June 25, 2007)
According to the Census Bureau and several non-government studies, the number of African immigrants in America has surged dramatically over the last 10 to 12 years. They are currently at least one million strong and growing. In its 2000 report, the Census Bureau recorded 881,000 U.S. residents who were born in Africa. But according to the Washington, D.C. think tank the Brookings Institution that number had jumped to 1.25 million in 2005 with New York City and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area showing the greatest increases. However, other cities, including Atlanta, Seattle and Minneapolis, have seen the number of African immigrants triple since 1990. But many Africans apparently do not feel especially welcomed by American Blacks. In an article last Sunday, the Arizona Daily Star quoted Kenyan-born Wanjiru Kamau as saying "Except for the skin, which is a façade, there is very little in common between Africans and African-Americans. We need to sit down and listen to each other's stories." # # #
