PAT BOONE RETURNS TO BILLBOARD'S R&B CHARTS: Veteran receiving Airplay for 'Pat Boone R&B Classics -- We Are Family.'
LOS ANGELES -- Pat Boone, dubbed "Soul Brotha' #2" by the late great James Brown is receiving major radio airplay for his new CD, Pat Boone R&B Classics -- We Are Family.
Boone has stated on numerous occasions that it was a "labor of love" but the love and pure joy that he put into this project has been reciprocated by the people and manifested in significant CD sales.
The album which features the remake of James Brown's signature tune "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" is the track most in-demand.
It should come as no surprise that Boone has a large rhythm and blues following since his first hit single, a cover version of the R&B song "Two Hearts" by the Charms, debuted April 1955 and peaked at #16 of the Pop charts, followed by a cover of Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame" that went to #14 on the R&B charts and #1 on the Pop charts in July of 1955.

In that era, the cover song was a common industry practice that helped create an opening to mainstream audiences. Boone's subsequent covers of R&B songs, including "At My Front Door" (El Dorados), "Gee Wittakers" (the Five Keys), "Tutti Frutti" and "Long Tall Sally" (Little Richard), and several others, continued to top the Pop and R&B charts, feeding the frenzy for soul music in the mainstream culture in 1955 and 1956 and preparing the way for the R&B-based Rock 'n' roll explosion to come.
Now, fifty years later, 2007, Pat Boone has renewed his R&B passport and regained a place on the R&B totem pole proving that he is still a dominant force in R&B music.
With such an impressive historic record, combined with creative genius, forethought and lasting vocal agility, is there any wonder why Pat Boone is still as phenomenal in 2007 in the Pop and R&B music genres as he was in the '50's?
Perhaps it's because his parents ate so much soul food (a secret that he divulged to James Brown during one of their joyous euphoric music jams). Whatever it is, Boone's got "it." To be identified as "Soul Brotha' # 2" is a tall order and Boone is wearing his music badge of distinction proudly.
