LESBIAN ACTIVIST RESPONDS TO TIM HARDAWAY TIRADE: Jasmyne Cannick says his words reflect larger homophobia within black community.
*The following is a response from Jasmyne Cannick, a Black lesbian journalist and activist, regarding former NBA All-Star Tim Hardaway and his recent proclamation of hating all gays:
"Tim Hardaway's statement that he hates gays is unfortunate and goes to show that there is a lot of work to be done in America as it relates to homophobia, particularly in the Black community."
"On the flipside, as newly out former NBA player John Amaechi has said, there are a lot of NBA players in the closet."
"Like the Black church, the world of sports has no shortage of lesbians and gays. Also like the Black church, the world of sports can be both homophobic and homotolerant when it wants to."
"So at the end of the day, whether Hardaway likes gays or not, he still goes into the locker room with them and undresses with them, eats with them, and plays with them and against them. He just doesn't know. And maybe that's better for them given Hardaway's recent tirade."
"The reality is that Hardaway does represent a segment of Black America and that it's important for Black same-gender loving people to be out and to have conversations with their family, friends, and co-workers about how comments like Hardaway's affects gay people."
"The sad thing is, Hardaway's comments might have just stopped a Black gay man from coming out of the closet."
"Hardaway needs to sit down with the Black gay community to talk about his unfortunate hatefull statements and where we do we go as a community from here."
"On a lighter note, maybe Hardaway's publicist can talk to Isaiah Washington's new publicist to get insight on what works and doesn't work regarding public homophobic statements and what to do in a crisis, like this one."
