STELLAR AWARDS FIRST-LAWRENCE HANDS OFF TROPHY TO TRIBBETT: continued coverage of the 22nd Annual awardsPlus, radio stations of the year winners list(January 24, 2007)
In our continuing coverage of the 22nd Annual Stellar awards, we acknowledge two momentous firsts. In what many are describing as one of the most spirit-filled shows ever, Donald Lawrence performed an unprecedented gesture. After being named the Artist of the Year, Lawrence who retired the Tri-City Singers last year, "sowed" the award into Tye Tribbett's life, passing on more than a statuette, but a "king's" anointing to Tribbett, who is undoubtedly a leader in the next wave of gospel greats. Kirk Franklin believes the hand off was symbolic of ushering in a new season and began to minister to the necessity of not clinging to the past. Franklin's comments matriculated into an intense spiritual shift in the atmosphere as Erica Campbell of Mary Mary followed his words, powerfully encouraging artists to return to a place of sincerity in their relationship with God, which lifted the show to a mini-revival. A move of God took over the show as raw shouts and praise filled the Grand Ole Opry House. Also, for the first time in its history, Gospel industry VIPs strolled the red carpet at the 22nd Annual Stellar Awards. Central City Productions enhanced the Stellar Awards with a red carpet welcome the night before the show. We continue our coverage of the Stellars with a photo gallery featuring a hodgepodge of shots before, during and after the event, including red carpet and the gala nominee dinner. Yolanda Adams and Jonathan Slocomb served as host for the evening of grandeur. Slocomb commented: "It felt good being a part of history." Slocomb was also honored to co-host the Red Carpet because this year marked his premiere as a Christian Comedy act at the Stellar Awards 10 years ago and said he wanted to return to show respect to Don Jackson, head of Central City Productions.
