‘SUBWAY SUPERMAN’ READY FOR HIS CLOSE-UP: Wesley Autrey in high demand after saving teen in NY subway.(January 5, 2007)
*While New York newspapers quickly labeled him the Subway Superman, he is known simply as “the hero” by New Yorkers and people around the world for his impromptu actions to save a teen in a Manhattan subway. Wesley Autrey, a 50-year-old construction worker and Navy veteran, was at the 137th Street/City College station Tuesday waiting for a train with his two young daughters when he saw 19-year-old student Cameron Hollopeter in the midst of what appeared to be a seizure. Hollopeter fell onto the tracks just as the train was approaching the station. "If I let him stay there by himself, he's going to be dismembered," Autrey remembered thinking. In an instant, Autrey left his two girls on the platform and jumped down onto the tracks. At first, he tried to pull the young man up, but he was afraid he wouldn’t make it in time and they would both be killed. Instead, he quickly moved Hollopeter into the lowered space between the rails and climbed on top of him – which allowed the southbound No. 1 train to roll over them both with only 2 inches to spare. Hollopeter’s stepmother, Rachel Hollopeter, said Autrey was “an angel.” “He was so heroic,” she told the AP early Wednesday in a telephone interview. “If he wasn’t there, this would be a whole different call.” Authorities said Hollopeter had suffered a medical problem, but was in stable condition at a hospital. Meanwhile, Autrey’s heroics made every evening news program Wednesday night, and every morning news program the following day. He says his phone has not stopped ringing since the incident occurred, and some of the callers were complete strangers so inspired by his bravery that they offered rewards. He was scheduled Thursday to tape an appearance on David Letterman's "Late Show" and visit City Hall to be honored by Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He’ll appear on the Ellen Degeneres Show Jan. 9.
