Over a turkey club sandwich, I shared a few minutes with former American Idol 4 contestant Anwar Roberts. The 27-year-old former school teacher from Jersey is going to be doing some gospel music on his album and wanted to check out the Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention.
Focused and determined to have creative agility, Roberts did not dive into a record agreement and is relying on the guidance of reputable R&B producer Bobby Wooten (Keith Sweat, Surface) as an independent. Anwar has already covered The Clark Sister’s “You Are the Sunshine,” which he performed at a church concert in Dallas on the same ticket as Myron Butler and Levi. He currently has a self-titled CD sampler featuring the gospel staple and three R&B cover tunes. However, the Jersey Boy says he doesn’t want to be classified as a “gospel”artist. He sings liberally sings positive music that flow from his creative well. Yet he makes it clear that his heart belongs to God no matter where he performs. “At the end of my performances, I always tell people I am a born again Believer,” Anwar states to his waiting audiences, then he belts “You Are the Sunshine” as the source of inspiration behind his broad grin. Expect Robinson’s debut project in the coming year to have a few gospel cuts on it.
