PRINCE TO WORK UP A BLACK SWEAT ON ‘AMERICAN IDOL?’: PageSix says artist will work with the contestants a la Manilow and Wonder.(April 5, 2006)
*Let’s just take a moment to imagine the scenarios - Bucky singing “Take Me With U,” or Taylor Hicks singing “Raspberry Beret.” What about Chris Daughtry putting his spin on “Controversy,” or Elliot singing “Lady Cab Driver?” Prince – perhaps the most famous music superstar to avoid TV appearances since Bob Dylan (except when he’s performing or accepting an award) – is actually going to coach contestants on “American Idol?” The New York Post’s PageSix column is reporting that the Purple wonder will perform on the show, as well as school the young singers in the way Barry Manilow and Stevie Wonder have done on previous episodes. According to one source, "It wasn't easy though because Prince apparently hates the show and has never even watched it." Now that seems more believable. But according to PageSix, Prince was talked into coaching and performing on the Fox series by his record company Universal. The label is reportedly hoping the appearance will keep his new album “3121” at the top of the charts. However, fans know that Prince doesn’t get “talked into” doing anything. This is a man who just repainted a house that wasn’t his. The “3121” CD, released on March 21, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Executives at Universal noticed the jump in album sales that followed Manilow’s appearance earlier this year. Also, the program’s theme song for departing contestants, Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day,” is currently No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart. And only time will tell how Shakira and Wyclef Jean’s performance last week of their new single “Hips Don’t Lie” will affect sales. Details on the date of Prince’s rumored appearance were not given.
