"Steven Ivory, I personally think you are brilliant, insightful and profoundly provocative. I totally agree with you about the laziness we've succumbed to in this country (03-28-06 EUR).
As a lover of language and communication on all levels, this rapidly growing cancerous tenacity of speech is vile and painful, subversive and destructive... This comes from a mother who used to do (and still does) word study in the dictionary with my son... & it was great fun! How fabulously remarkable is it to challenge the mind and imagination of a child and then to ride the wave with them? Now that to me is truly AWESOME!
I've been looking forward to reading your columns over the years since my 'lil'
sis' turned me on to the EUR while my husband and I were living out of the country (in Egypt for 5 years).
Watching my Egyptian friends labor over their children's lessons with them was truly eye opening. If only our younger parents were willing to spend that kind of time with our children. They are so proud of the opportunities that education represents for them and their families and then to think that we have so many choices, so many possibilities to offer our children and watch them be trivialized and even diminished to point where in some cases, the option of education is forsaken for a hustle - a money chase - brings tears to my eyes and unspeakable sadness to my heart...
So don't be thinking that I'm not engaging every child I come in contact with every chance I get... I can't bear to be sad! I truly appreciate your intelligence and your candor. I can't wait to hear your thoughts on LOVE. Peace & Love."
