Comment: Hip-hop is a form of poetic expression, and poetry has been around for centuries, despite there not being English words that rhyme with purple, orange or silver. That said, conscious hip-hop is a subgenre that doesn't stand a chance against the onslaught of lowest common denominator, booty-shaking songs and videos that the corporations and media aim at the masses. It's all about money, NO DJ playing hip-hop music on a major station has control over their own playlist so we get what we get; and what's popular is not usually good, and what's good is often not popular. I think the quote abuot Mein Kampf set over beats is accurate, I remember telling my kids when 50's "In Da Club" was hot that Dre could have gotten someone to recite the phone book over that beat and it would have been a hit.

Comment: > I definitely agree Jazzfan. Im usually one of McWhorter's vehement detrators but, I think he has a point on this one. On second thought Hip Hop is very political. Its used in a way to demean, distract, promotes sexism, materialism and helps to maintain the status quo. HH is a political tool just not for us!!!
