Comment: What the hell's wrong with singing 'Lift Every Voice And Sing'?!

Name: adifferentpath
Comment: nothing. however, the people who're feeling something is are looking @ this issue from a more political/politically correct stance. I appreciate her actions. Next.

Name: Angel
Comment: MRS Phoenix - If somebody asks you to sing a specific song (especially the Star Spangled Banner at a formal event) and you agree to do that, it is completely disrespectful for you to take it upon yourself to sing something else. If she wanted to sing "Lift Every Voice and Sing", she should've asked if that was a ok. If they said no, she could've declined to participate or sing what they requested. Would you appreciate it if you hired someone to sing the Lord's Prayer at your wedding, but instead they sang "Bump and Grind" by R Kelly?! It is about respecting someone's wishes or respectfully declining if they don't want to accommodate what you want to do.

Comment: This is unreal! There are black folk all over the place creating unnecessary skirmishes for the Obama camp. I applaud her moxy but not knowing whats on the horizon Rene should have stuck to the program. Regular Joe's aren't projecting and there are still some white folks just sittin' around waitin' on this kind of shyt to spin. Damn!

Name: PRDC
Comment: How is it that this young lady singing Lift Every Voice and Sing would cause harm to Obama. people are just looking for anything they can to stop this man. He has no control over what other people do in life. Stop making excuses and listen and have your own opinion on what is going on with this President's election. She was wrong, that's the person people should complain about.

Name: PositiveB
Comment: I couldn't agree with you more PRDC. If this woman isn't officially associated with the Obama campaign, then why should he even be connected to this? We need to stop giving this type of non-sense any merit. This may sound like I'm being funny, but if some white person decided to sing "Dixie" instead of the Natioanl Anthem at an event for a mayor, would anyone even open their mouth to connect this action to Sen. McCain??

Name: realuvbaby
Comment: Bad decision, bad choice at a bad time. If nothing else, be a person of your word. If you say you will do A, don't flip and do B, then make excuses. Bottom line, you did it because she had an agenda that was not those of the people who had invited her to sing. The invitation was based on her talent and gift, not desire to turn this into a personal agenda. Right things for the wrong reasons are still wrong. If a Jewish person burst out with Hava Nagila or Sunrise Sunset at an black event, ya would have been p i s s e d and fists, and verbal %*$aults would have followed. Don't color coat it, it was wrong. It's not a matter of the "song" it's the principle. She deceived others for her own personal gain. Now, spin that on CNN, the View, TRL, 106 & Park for 15 minutes. Never heard of her before this incident.

Name: realuvbaby
Comment: And we all know that all aspects of black life, culture and tradition will now come up under the microscope. That's to be expected. In that examination, we show who we REALLY are. We all know that everyone Black is going to be identified with Barak at this time, so don't even front. To whom much is given, much is required. At this time, because of the times we're in and the players of the game, we must behave more responsibly, as to give fodder to their so-called pundits, and not to give them any bull sh__ reason not to be fair and honest to, with and about Obama to deny him the presidency. All perceived to be deviant acts committed by us will used to invalidate Mr. Obama and his candidacy. I know we are not used to it, but if we want to be we have to watch ourselves. Let's not the actions of a few, and you know how the media can spin, spoil our moment. It's so unnecessary and takes away from us all.

Name: realuvbaby
Comment: That's right, Angel. It's about R E S P E C T. All respect is earned, and once you give it, you can demand it. Bad decision, bad choice . . .

Name: dcdouglass01
Comment: "...Her ill-timed, totally inappropriate act has been fodder for speculation that it could have a possible backdoor blowback on Obama..." A problem for Obama if Obama had done the singing. Otherwise, much ado about nothing, Brother Hutchinson. And as far as some (racist) whites' perception of Obama, that won't change even if Obama himself led the audience in the National Anthem at every event he attends between now election day.

Name: DCGG
Comment: While I think it was ill timed, it takes a gusty bytch to do some shyt like that so I gotz to give sister ghurl her props...

Name: MsVanese
Comment: So now Obama has to justify EVERYTHING other black people do? Get real.

Name: yunvme
Comment: Obama doesn't have to justify anything and he certainly doesn't have to apologize. The problem that some are missing is this. Black Presidient. Thats ok if YT (oh wait I forgot we dont call white people that) thinks we are getting a black WHITE Politician. However, if things become too black then its over. Black president, talk of a "black house", and a Black national anthem are way to much for some white people. That is the problem for Barack.

Name: naturalsista
Comment: my post from yesterday...i have an opinion on this and i say don't apologize rene marie. isn't it time to stop apologizing for every dang thing that is done that harms no one mentally, physically or spiritually because a select few have appointed themselves spokespeople for the masses as to what or who is patriotic, who has morals, who has christian values, yada, yada, yada. my motto - be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind. right on rene marie...

Comment: LMAO @ Rene. I wish I could have seen their faces when she started "Lift every voice..." I wonder if anyone tried to sing along. But, that shyt wasn't cool. That was not the time or the place to garner your 15 minutes.

Name: ChiDiva9
Comment: Man I sure hate it but this might become an issue. However it is NOT as big of a deal as Cindy being a prescription drug addict stealing from her own charity (they have tried to make it look like a mere mistake), John the adulterer sneaking around behind wife #1's back with Cindy and the kicker leaving the disabled wife with his disabled self for a millionairess. This dude is an opportunist and a text book Republican with his economic trickle down theories. This is another story about nothing he had to do with PERSONALLY that they might try and drag out on Obama.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: Woman singing LEVAS instead of TNA and it may pose a problem for Obama how? I watched the news over the weekend including y/day Earl and not only didn't I see a seconds worth of coverage on this one, I haven't heard anyone in the news reference Obama's "denouncement" but you. I wonder why that is?

Name: Janissi
Comment: Is it just me or aren't you guys tired of tip toeing around the plantation? I understand we live in a white dominated society; however, I understand we, regardless of race, are all human. Why is it that we black folks must sit down and be on our best behavior so the white race won't get upset and lump us all together. I don't see other races so paranoid yet people of all races do stupid things. I completely understand that we are continuously under a microscope, but I for one, am sick of it. We black people must scold one of our own when we get outta line and misbehave because massah ain't gonna like it. Everything we do is attributed to Obama. Pure ridiculousness. We truly are playing on an uneven playing field and they wonder why we so called "play the race card." I'm just saying. Someone educate me please.

Comment: some yall are so damn scared azz negroes..... reallux mcnasty scared negroes

Comment: REALLUV to Harriet Tubman: "Y weze got ta leave Massah? You shant be taklin like that...Massah good...I'm tellin on yuo Harriet.." HARRIET PULLS OUT GUN AND SHOOTS REALLUV

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: Hey I'm going to cosign you Janissi. I totally agree with what you're saying. I don't necessarily think that applies to this situation at hand b/c this lady was contracted to perform a specific song and she should have been professional enough to follow through. But this expectation of Obama to "apologize" for everything "too black" or associated with blackness is getting old.

Name: Janissi
Comment: Southernbelle, you are so right. I should've add that I did think she was wrong to flip the script like that. It was very unprofessional, but associating this with Obama is complete foolishness. Thanks for pointing that out.

Name: Southernbelle
Comment: ...Also, we as African Americans have agendas and concerns that we want addressed. True, the President should lead color blind and represent all people but that has not been true since...well it's never been true. I have major respect for Obama but my expectations of him differs from no one in his position. When a bill comes across his desk, effecting me and folks like me, I want him to be brazen enough to push it through without fear of backlash from "others". Otherwise, we're back at square one.

Name: McNasty
Comment: Khufu there you go again! I'm not scared of a damn thing but in light of all the other shat that the media has worked to make stick to Obama it's time to just focus on the election and not the little bullshat some of us can get up to. I applaud her moxy but she should have stuck to the program. PERIOD!

Name: Janissi
Comment: Southernbelle, great point! We apologize for that too. Everyone else, women, gays, etc., question what the future president will do to benefit their lives (abortion rights and gay marriage, to name a few), but again, we don't want to ask the same for us. Why is this??? We say, "He's not going to be the president for black America." No, he sure won't, but others don't hesitate to find out what's in store for their particular cause. It's not as though we feel Obama will fix all the issues we have as a community; that's impossible, but we can at least know he us in mind and that he will do whatever is in his power to address our needs as well.

Name: MrsPhoenix
Comment: Well either way, there will be/are consequences for our actions...I'm sure the Sistah was prepared for the bashing. Wish someone had informed my older sister of the consequences before she terminated herself out of a $134,000/year job at UT *sigh*

Name: obraxton
Comment: LEVAS is a beautiful song, but it is not OUR national anthem. There's not one for us, and one for them. It is an anthem of of liberation used in a time where progress was needed to be changed. But when you are reverencing our country, and you are a citizen of this country, you should respect the symbols of this country. NO, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OBAMA, but common sense would have told anyone that he would be asked about it. I think it was tasteless, and inappropriate for the occassion, and will prevent a lot of other black singers from the opportunity to sing their anthem. It has nothing to do with expression more than it had to do with making headlines. We need to stop acting like we want to be a divided nation. The comments we make on this board, if it were the opposite on a white board we'd be disgusted. And no, I'm not a white person or a Republican.
