Comment: prisons are a billion dollar industry with many of those responsible for the growth (attorneys, judges, politicians) benefiting from the wholesale lockup of blacks and browns. i'm well aware that there are those who need to be locked up for heinous crimes comitted but the majority of those in prison should have received alternative sentencing such probation, community service. these 'do-gooders' incite public fear with false statements about if they don't pass harsher sentencing laws the neighborhoods will be filled with serious and violent felons. as long as people have a 'nimby' mentality those in position will continue to do as they please with no accountability.

Comment: Ironic that the America's PIC is perpetrating one of the biggest crimes in the country's history, every day. More money should be spent on rehabilitation. Also society makes it very difficult for these men and women, rehabilitated or not, to re-enter society. Many things can be done, such as providing economic incentitves (e.g., tax breaks) to employers to encourage hiring of non-violent offenders. We can never be regarded as a compassionate nation until we do much much more than we're doing in this arena.

Comment: adding insult to injury, the incarcerated are in prisons great distances from where they live AND they get counted in the Census for their prison locations . . . the Census information is as good as dollars in the bank because communities get federal, state, and local monies for whatever based on their populations . . . meanwhile, as convicts, the incarcerated get no say about the use of the money that their status brings to the prison community . . . did you know that some people are actually thinking about early release for some of the prison population so that they can go and fight in Iraq?

Comment: As long as this country continues to exclude Black men from the workforce, the incarceration rate of Black males will continue to climb. There's a direct connection between unemployment and crime.Desperate people resort to desperate measures as a means of survival. This is not brain surgery. We don't need any more so-called leaders to analyze the situation. As Dr.King stated we are in the paralysis of analysis.Let's get up off our collective %*$es and solve this problem!

Comment: We have to demand that our politicians STOP sending jobs overseas - bring the jobs back AND kill the 3 strikes you're out that has so many brothers locked up AND have job-training and mentoring programs for those released from prison so they don't go BACK to prison. There is a vested interest for ALL of us to demand this because those released from prison return to OUR communities.

Comment: We ALL know that America does not like Black Folk...we KNOW this. We KNOW that they will do ANYTHING to make things difficult (to say the least) for us...we KNOW this. Why aren't more brothas "fightin' the Power"? Men/boys are DYING in prison, AND on the street; children don't have their fathers and are suffering; mothers and wives are the head-of-household and bread winner in MANY cases, and are suffering due to lack of support; communities are being ripped apart because there is NO male leadership. There are Brothas on the STREET right now, nevermind locked-up, who don't see their seeds, don't provide for their seeds, and sadly, some don't even know thier seeds. Don't let the ENEMY continue to ROB, STEAL, KILL, and DESTROY...it's what he does! MEN, PLEASE TAKE YOUR LEADERSHIP POSITIONS. IT'S TIME TO STEP-UP YOUR GAME! GOD has made YOU the HEAD and not the tail. TAKE YOUR POSITIONS AND LEAD!

Comment: Cats need to learn the criminal adn thug life is a road to nowhere. Education and being an %*$et to your community are the ways of manhood. The results of this high prison rate are millions of black children beign raised w/out a father which iis another story onto itself. Now the ones that are out there slanging, robbing and taking from our neighborhoods I could care less about them and their stupid azzes should be locked up. I know that system isn't right but at the end of the day life is about the choices that we all make.

Comment: I definitely cosign Train. Look the system sucks and more now than ever, the system is geared towards those who have money and against those who do not.
I hate to say it but it's time to stop being a dayum victim. Nobody made you sell drugs or rob. There are many ways to provide and you don't have to work at McDonald's either. Why is it that Africans, Asians, Polish, etc can come over here and start businesses with nothing and become successful? Because they have the will to do so. What the hell happened to our will? Every population has poor so why is it that black folk have so many more who are poor and destitute versus others? Are we really that lazy? Is it the education thing?
I don't have any sympathy for the locked up unless it is a completely false charge. You have no right getting mad for getting 10 years for selling crack and Chad only got 2. Your azz shouldn't have been selling in the first place.
We are getting left behind in the ever changing world. We need to wake up to what is really important and get to work!

Comment: I agree 1000% Ms. Bee, that's what I'm talking about. Folks like Mr. Mandela went to prison for a just and noble cause but for the most part a majority of the cats in this country are in prison because they are bad people. To be a part of the solution and not part of the problem is the way to get it done for our people. Look at Maurice Clarett for an example. He had it all when he played football at Ohio St. Free education and playing for a good team but he blew it trying to be "the man". Now his sorry azz is on the lockdown and he has a daughter that's going to spend her first seven years w/out her father. Then again a lot of these kid's are better off because if their old man is a criminal then he should be locked up instead of being allowed to raise a kid.

Comment: Interesting how most Americans dont see how illegal immigration contributes to this. We keep hearing that illegal Mexicans/Latinos will do jobs that "even Black Americans" wont do. Its not that brothas wont do the work, it's that no-one wants to work for $3-4/hr, 12-14hrs a day, like the illegals will. The illegals take these jobs, which contributes to high unemployment among black men, which is directly co-related to the higher crime rate. That being said, it blows my mind when I see black people supprting illegal immigration and amnesty for illegals, or acting like its not a big deal. Of course, waiting for Jesse, Sharpton, the NAACP etc to take a stand on this is a lost cause...

Comment: DoctorSmooth,
Illegals don't get paid the slave wages that most think they do. Granted, they do take jobs that Americans don't want to work. If you look back in history, the same arguments used against them were the same arguments used against "negros". Many an employer will tell you that they pay them on par if not a bit more than blacks or whites. They simply get their hustle on! Especially in construction jobs. Let's face it. Americans are lazy period. Very few of us, regardless of color, are trying to hustle like the immigrants. Even most Mexican Americans don't work like illegals.
Now I don't support illegal immigration. Screw that. Come over here legally or not at all. And there are definitely huge inequalities as to who is allowed a free pass on illegal immigration. Look at the Haitians. They get sent right back home every time. But, if they were a great value to the American work force, they would not. This is all about money.

Comment: I do believe that this is a big money maker. It is unfortuneate but everybody is trying to make money off of everything. But I also believe if you do not do dirty stuff then you do not have to worry about jail (in most cases). The solution? Follow the Law. No if ands or buts. You cannot complain if you are breaking the law and then go to jail. That is YOUR fault. Do not put yourself out there.

Comment: There are many components to the solution here: deterence (e.g., don't do the crime and you don't have to worry about the time), fairer sentencing, rehabilitation, better employment opportunities (after doing the time), restitution of voting rights, etc. Implementing or focusing on just one component would be simplistic and won't solve the problem. As far as the immigration problem goes, get control of the borders (not "border", as the conservatives put it, as if we have only one) first, because even if you deported the supposedly 12 million illegals that are here (which won't happen because the resources to do it aren't available), they'd just come right back into the country.

Comment: If Black people continue to allow this outrage of seeing Black young males get picked up and cart away, what is to say if you are not next or if this is a scheme to round up Black people in a concentration camp. Well they have already started. And Black people have to wake up and don't allow their behavior to be such as to be locked up. For it's all for the benefit of the prison and justice complex.
