Comment: ***OFTEN IMITATED***OFTEN SAMPLED, COPIED & WHATEVER ELSE THESE ARTISTS OUT TODAY DO, there will NEVER be another JAMES BROWN. Prince, Michael Jackson, Usher, and anyone thats imitates your moves, should recognized a TRUE genius well ahead of his time. R.I.P. James. You truly deserve your rest. WE WILL MISS YOU.

Comment: RIP to the most important figure to R&B music, The Godfather of Soul, Mr. James Brown. Thank you Sir for so much great music and for making us stand proud as Black people. Right on brother, Right On. PEACE!

Name: Train
Comment: As of today in the memory of James Brown the title of Soul Brother No#1 will be officially retired. Being a child of the 70's there is no singer of today that is worthy of handling that title. We will always love you James, rest in peace my brotha.

Comment: RIP Godfather of Soul and condolences to the Brown family. I echo the sentiment of thank you for so much great music. I was a young girl of 9 or 10 when 'Say it Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud' came out and I recall us running around the school yard singing at the top of our voices those infamous words. I'm sure those nuns didn't know what to make us boldly proclaiming we are proud because we are Black.

Comment: My condolences to the Brown family. Really hope Michael Jackson, Prince and all make a statement... Ironically my favorite JB moment is when Eddie Murphy imitated him on one of his stand ups.

Name: Gurlfrand
Comment: Rest in peace, JB - I can't even begin to say how much his music influenced my young life when I was growing up. James Brown was the Beatles to me. In my family's house, we used to have a picture of James, from his album, "The Big Payback" on our wall, back in the 70's!

Name: Jack_Blackmusic
Comment: Always Imitated, but still today never duplicated!. Heard this this morning at 5:00 a.m. while hearing his music on my radio alarm. Thought this was a bad dream with the JB's playing in the background. Was scheduled to play BB Kings New Years evening, but somehow I didn't think that he would make it.

Comment: R.I.P. Godfather. Not only was this man a great musician and dancer and the founder of funk but he was a superb businessman. This man owned radio stations and Lear jets back in the 60's when many of our artists were signing away their royalties for an automobile. He was "Black and Proud" at a time when being so could have put his career in jeopardy. He will be sorely missed.

Comment: Mr JAMES BROWN,SOUL BROTHER#1(2.3&4)The Godfather of Soul,The hardest working man in show business,Mr Dynamite,The headliner of all Headliners. When you say the word legend he was THE MAN.His contributions to America especially to us,we could never repay this brother. He came from the bottom and worked his way,I said WORKED(the old fashioned way) his way to the top and kept it going.Where would our music be without his contributions.Every format that plays our music should have a real salute to this man.Urban A/C imo didnt show his music the love he deserved, allowing whoever to say he was 2 Black for the format.Shame on us,I would hope that in his passing we would end that madness and also give this brother the going away salute he deserves.BET,RADIO ONE.CLEAR CHANNEL,INNER CITY etc should broadcast his funeral, this man was our royalty and if we don't recognize this we are really lost.Mr Brown thank you for your contributions to the lives of us all,we will miss you ,always love and remember you.Our prayers to your family and friends. Can you imagine the concert tonite in soul heaven, the shock on peoples faces when they announce and wrapping up this show The Godfather of Soul James Brown.JOB WELL DONE.

Comment: My heartfelt condolences to the family. I remember Mr. Brown as the singer who gave free back to school concerts in Atlanta every fall. I have loved him every since. Rest in peace, Sir you made a great contribution to the world and will not be forgotten.

Comment: My Sympathies to the Brown Family, I met Mr. Brown way back in the 70's my older sister is one of his bigest fans and we spent the day trying to keep the sad news from her until tomorow mainly because this is our Mothers birthday and our first year without her and we are still mourning our lost.We give our heartfelt condolences to the Brown Children.

Comment: I grew up in Queens (an outer borough of NYC) and remember that James Brown had this enormous house in St. Albans...Count Basie, Lena Horne, etc. all had homes there back in the day....every Christmas season James Brown had his home decked to the nines with Christmas lights, decorated trees and he had the biggest Black Santa on his door, I ever saw as a child. My father would take us pass that house every year that James Brown owned it; It was the neighborhood "Black House". PBS did an amazing American Masters episode on James Brown and I hope they re-air it in the coming weeks. James Brown did a lot for Black culture. He made it ok to say "black" and be proud. At one time he had a chain of restaurants and even James Brown food coupons...this man was legendary. How fitting that his last public appearance was giving toys to the needy in his home town. Perhaps his passing will remind all of us, us Black people, to remember our Pride, our heritage, our sense of self and maybe just maybe we will get it together because the window is shut and the light is off -- James Brown has left the building!!!

Comment: His musical legacy is just huge. No one else comes close. That said, his years of drugs and violence are also very well-known. But Brown's third story is the one that is so often omitted, and that's the story of his early years. That he survived them is a near miracle. Several years ago a photo of the house where he was born was on the net, but I can't find it now. It really was a one-room shack. He was abandoned by his mother, lived for awhile in a brothel. From what little I've read about it, he pretty much raised himself from a very young age under very trying conditions. Deprivation is no contest, but I really can't think of any well-known American who came up harder than Brown. This isn't just a story about coming up from a tough neighborhood, it's a story about coming up in conditions that were at times a mere a step or two away from feral. People who succeed out of tough neighborhoods often brag about it, but people who have known hunger don't talk about it very much. RIP James Brown

Comment: RIP Godfather of Soul! I grew up listening to your music and Loved it. You will be missed. There will never be another James Brown.

Comment: His contribution to the Black Power struggle defined my college days of rage. He was the Black Power movement!! He saved D C from burning after the King azzasination. Thanks for your contribtution, thanks for the beautiful early songs of Prisoner of Love, Think and Try Me. Thanks for discovering Thomasina Montgomery who latter became Tammy Montgomery then Tammy Terrel. She teamed with Marvin Gaye and as they say, the rest is history!

Name: GHank
Comment: What can you say? We lost an icon. Musically, he went were where no other person has gone before or has gone since. he is the sole reason why we are "black" people today. Remember.... until "Say it Loud, I'm Black..I am Proud" we were called "Negro and "Colored". I know James is resting in peace. I don't worry about him being forgotton, because he won't be.

Name: jboy
Comment: GHank>> I thought th town I grew up in Tennessee was the only place that was still calling Black people colored or Negro up till Mr. Brown came out with 'Say It Loud'. Until then, to call anyone black was considered an insult on the same level as calling them a n!gger -- it was guarenteed to get your mouth smacked by whichever adult heard you say it or your butt kicked by whoever you said it to. After "Say It Loud" came out almost overnight EVERYBODY was Black. And d@mn proud of it! Someone earlier called the man a genious...I know some may beg to differ, but I've always felt the true geniouses are people that can make HUGE changes with the smallest of efforts. With one little song James Brown made HUGE changes in the way we not only saw and thought of oursleves, but the way others saw us as well.

Name: GHank
Comment: JBoy>>>I echo your sentiments. James Brown's music was BOLD! You had Motown, who wanted to make music so white folk would accept them. you had Stax, the British invasion, doo-wop.....and then you had James Brown. Talk about to the left? (Ha-ha) Anyone remember "Cold Sweat"? He's the only person I know used his horns as his background singers. Rhythmically, the song, "I Got The Feeling" was so ground breaking, people are still trying to understand it.

Name: goodnplenty1957
Comment: my favorite James Brown song...well i got two...number one.. DOIN IT TO DEATH (although it was billed as the JB's)..(we gonna have a funky good time)..first time i ever heard that song was in 1971, WDAF TV channel 4 Kansas City, MO..it was the first time i ever saw SOUL TRAIN and they were using it almost every week for the soul train line....the other one..PAPA DONT TAKE NO MESS..it reminds me of growing up and my late father. ...James there are countless songs out there that you did that are still heard in songs today, and back in the day)..R.I.P. Godfather.

Comment: All I can say is THANK YOU, MR. BROWN for giving this little black girl so much, not the least of which is pride in validating my blackness by by allowing me to be and feel comfortable being called BLACK. Hot Pants. Sex Machine. Say It Loud! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. It's a A Man's World. Papa Don't Take No Mess. PayBack. Papa's Got a Brand New Bag. Music to dance to and talent shows to choreograph (we loved breaking down while takin it to the Bridge with those awesome dance moves <<lol>>). James Brown's fame and greatness were never marketed nor was it ever put into a package, yet his music, like that of Bob Marley, will live on forever and ever. We don't need to get hit by a media truck to know or decide if something or someone is great. Greatness stands the test of time on its own, as it did and does with Mr. Brown. And my condolences to his family and his legion of serious fans who have hung in there with him and will miss him very much. I will never forget those performances at the Apollo, where I sat front and center, while you worked your way into a frenzy and they had to bring you off the stage with you wrapped in your many flamboyant capes. Those feet moved so fast, it's almost as if he were flying and not dancing! More flamboyant than Liberace!!! His influence will never be duplicated. THANK YOU MR. BROWN, for your musical legacy and RIP.

Comment: MY MAN, JAMES BROWN!! YOU HAVE FINALLY TAKEN YOUR REST. GOD HAS DECIDED YOU HAVE WORKED HARD ENOUGH AND HE DECIDED TO BRING YOU HOME. THE ATL WILL NEVER BE THE SAME! my memories of James Brown will be thought with a big smile. those funky dances! the Camel Walk, The Popcorn! and of course, THE JAMES BROWN! i never forget the school talent shows where there was this young boy named Gather used do "The James Brown" and had it down pat! even the split! man, you could move! and you inspired all of us to move into a "cold sweat!" and you brought out a lot serious musicians that enbodied funk and soul music today which has emulated the hip hop movemnet. Boosty Collins, Maceo Parker! and who could not forget those funky "horney horns, the JB's!" i'll never forget Eddie Murphy's rendition of you as he did that skit "Celebrity Hot Tub" and the horns were kicking! and Eddie did a wonderful imitation of James so good! (Eddie, if someone decides to do a biopic on James, you might want to step to the plate!) but yeah, James Brown will never, ever, be missed because the fire of his spirt will forever be in the hearts of all of us who are BLACK AND PROUD!! Right on my brother, Right on!! try to RIP, baby!

Name: bigchassie
Comment: oh, one more thing...i want to commend BET this time! yall, they stepped up to the plate last night. they put together a special on James Brown and it was lovely clipping of interviews with Tavis, and Donnie Simpson and the lady reporter whose name eludes me right now but it was a nice special they did on him. they pulled it together quickly and it was very nice. Right on BET!

Comment: This man was one of my idols. I was lucky enough to meet him in the 11th grade in front of the Apollo Theatre as he was coming down 125th Street and he asked me what was I doing out by the box office, and I told him I wanted to be the first on line. He said it's kinda early for you to be out, I said I got out early. He told me "don't cut class for me or nobody else." "Wanna watch me rehurse? I said yeah! The band was already set up on the Apollo stage and it was just me, the band and James Brown in the Apollo that evening. There were many other times I've been in his company and when he recorded "Live At the Apollo, Vol. 2" and "Revolution of The Mind" at the Apollo, I was there, he recorded these live and the intensity of those shows would have killed a lesser man. This man came from nothing and let blew up the world. He lived life with both feet dead up life's azz. He was a straight, no chaser brother. JAMES BROWN lived life. Left a legacy that is larger than life. We all should be so lucky to do the same. God Bless, Godfather, God Speed and Thank you.

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: GHank, y'all, I damned near broke my back on "Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud," Cheez Martin and that bazz lick was CRAZY! Brother Brown wrote just about every song he did. "Talkin' Loud, and Sayin' Nothin'," "Sex Machine," "Lickin' Stick," (the one he named for me, my theme song) "MOTHER POPCORN," "Hot Pants," "Get On The Goodfoot," "Super Bad."

Name: VeeCee
Comment: I am so saddened by the loss of Mr. Brown. A lot of my childhood memories are based on dancing to his music, and I continued to enjoy hearing his music well into adulthood. I do not have one particular favorite song by him because I loved too many of them ("Sex Machine," "I've Got the Feeling," "Big Payback," "Make it Funky," "Get on the Good Foot," etc. etc. etc.) When I recorded the BET Awards a few years ago when Mr. Brown received an achievement award, I still remember how crazy the audience got when Michael Jackson surprised him onstage. The look on Mr. Brown's face was priceless. Many of our entertainers owe Mr. Brown a debt of gratitude; his music lives forever! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU Mr. Brown, and may God bless his family.

Name: Lemonhead2
Comment: All I can say is "I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD", Thanks Mr. Brown!

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: VeeCee, I feel that half of my life is gone too. He was a very central part of my life, his music, his force. He recorded, "Please, Please, Please, Please" one year before I was born, so him and his music was always a part of my life. If the family members wanted me to dance at a party, (and I could dance my azz off), they knew to throw on a James Brown song. It was a wrap after that.

Comment: Woke up Christmas morning intending to celebrate the life of our Lord and savior.Little did I know I'd also be celebrating the life of a man who gave me my Militant edge. He told me I didn't have to ask nobody to give me nuthing 'cause "I can open up the door, and git it myself"...I remember seeing him in concert in the early 70's here in the 'Burgh; a week previous to that there had been a shoot out between the Panthers and the pigs..a pig lost that day..So here we are the concert screaming to the top of our long "SAY IT LOUD, I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD" and racist azz Pittsurgh turned on the house lights and put a stop to the show...Lest we start another riot up in there and off another pig?...I'll never forget it it...I cannot count the times I've seen James Brown in concert..Come on now, we grew up on the man!..He put us all on "The Good Foot" with our "Hot Pants"!

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: GHank, you should have seen him record "Revolution of the Mind" at the Apollo. When he finished with us, women were throwing their wigs, pantyhose, everything, it was MASS PANDEMONIUM in that mutha! Then brother Brown told the band to "SWING, SWING, Yo, GHank it was an experience I'll never forget. Folk was straight ballistic. Cheez Martin on bazz guitar, Maceo Parker, Sinclair Pinkney, Tommy Cook on drums, Fred Wesley horns, PLEASE!!! Brother Brown's hands are as soft as a baby's azz too. My first recollection of James Brown was the movie, "Black Caesar". My babysitter was in high school then and they would play the song, "The Boss" from that soundtrack album. All I remember is "Pay The Cost to be the Boss" (Ha-ha)

Comment: Still rocked by the passing of the Godfather of Soul. I was sitting here thinking back to when I was a little girl in the 60ies and my Parents having parties and calling us out of the room to dance to James Brown's music. Acting out in front of our Parents like we were on stage and my oldest brother was James Brown having a cape thrown over his back as we marched him off "stage "(living room floor). God I have so many memories of the Godfather it just doesn't seem real. One of my favorite songs by James Brown and I heard it the other day was "This is a Man's World", the other is Say It Loud, I'M BLACK AND I'M PROUD! OOoh Wee he made Negros Proud of their beautiful Black Skin. I have such great memories of James Brown, he has been around all of my life jamming!! Maceo!!! James Brown recorded his first hits a few hunded miles from here in Columbus, OH. King Records was owned by Syd Nathan and his AR man was Ralph B%*$. B%*$.thought James Brown was too loud and crude and would NEVER make money for King records. James Brown recorded Prisoner of Love which is one of the most beautiful songs ever recorded. I DARE anybody out there in cyber-apace to play this record TODAY and tell me it ain't a work of art. James Brown was the KING of Randy's Rccord Shop, Gallatin, TN. Comment: This guy is a true legend. I was shocked and saddened by this news. You can call him the Godfather but I think he should have been recognized as the “King”. He has paved the way for so many in the music business. His influence was conveyed through his style of dancing to the samples of his songs. His music was untouchable- Funky Drummer, I’m Black and I’m Proud, Body Heat, Out Of Sight, Night Train I can even remember learning to slow dance on It’s a Man’s world on my daddys feet. Think… who the hell from this generation is going to take up the torch and produce some classic music now?

Comment: Missing you already. What a true innovator. It brings a smile to my face to know that you live life to the fullest and you perpetually gave. Thank you James for giving continously. RIP, you will be GREATLY missed!

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: Fanteeking, true that! SpecialK, don't forget "Lickin' Stick" and when D.J. Hollywood played the Apollo, his dressing room was a flight above James Brown's and I went down to his dressing room and he had his curlers in and was taking them about because it was about to be show time, his backup singers were ironing their outfits and we were having a conversation. When they released him from jail and he did Madison Square Garden, I was front and center. I'll always have fond memories of Brother Brown.

Comment: GHank, you never saw Brother Brown live???? Man, it's an earth moving, life altering experience. He gave his all and everybody who worked for him had better. That band of his was the tightest band in the LAND! The steam would be rising from the Apollo like it was on fire. The humidity was over 150 degrees farenheight, you had capacity crowd at Apollo and Danny Raye the announcer is behind the curtain, and he's announcing James Brown as the hardest working man in show business, and he would rattle off his number one hits holler, Jaaaaames Brown and after that all hell breaks loose. He always has to be on the bill by himself. There's nobody in the business that could follow him. PERIOD.

Comment: Mothership>>>>Straight up.....I never saw him live personally. I have just about every record he made. My mom saw him a bunch of times at the Uptown in Philly and at the Apollo in Harlem when I was a kid. I even have copies of his Ed Sullivan shows and Mike Douglas shows. My band director in college always told me how tight his band was. He would fine a musician in a heartbeat for shoes not shined, missing a beat..you name it. Now, I did meet Fred Wesley once.

Name: MOTHERSHIP
Comment: Taz, I loved that X-mas song by James. "Santa Claus, Go Straight to the Ghetto." He made me very proud when he recorded it. The man did so much for us as a people. I remember when he brought the radio station, first Black owned radio station in America at the time. I remember when he battled the IRS and they led him out in handcuffs just before him going on at the Apollo, and he told us, "to not go anywhere, he'll be back." Brother Brown put it down in this life you hear me? A life well lived and a legacy no one can match.

Comment: What wonderful memories of the Godfather is being shared here today. This is one of the greatest legacies of Brown's: the gift to touch and bring joy to the lives of a people who are so often unfairly maligned. Thank goodness James Brown's music made us feel 'so good'. His music gave us pride, dignity and faith that we needed to see us through the turbelent times. I always heard stories from my mother, who use to go to the Apollo with her aunt, to see James. Her aunt was crazy about JB! I wish I had the opportunity to see him for myself in this lifetime. RIP Godfather! LL was right when he said there are 3 B's in music: Bach, Beethoven and Brown!

Comment: OOOOH who mentioned "Soul Power"?...Damn that was the joint!....GHANK, SHIP and TAZ what's going on?....Happy Kwanzaa to all my peeps out there! UMOGA(unity) is today's principle and how ironic 'cause Brother James unified his people thru his music...Anyone remember James' hype man Bobby Byrd?..I was in love with him..His voice mesmorized me for days.."Don't let nobody stop you from yourself a ball"....."Say yeah(yeah), say yeah(yeah)..GHANK 'Escapism' was also the joint..Remember "King herion"?

Name: NYCsoul
Comment: Another thing I want to add about JB. I was reading Gerri Hershey's 'Nowhere to Run' about Soul/R&B music. In her chapter about James, it was said that James made 'ugly' beautiful. He was short, dark and some would say, not very attractive. With exception of Nat King Cole, most male singers from 60s & 70s era were either of light or brown skin. This is what made James special was because he said LOUDLY "I AM BEAUTIFUL, TOO". Say it Loud, I'm black and I'm proud. That song had such a deep meaning for us and I hope that rappers/hip hoppers would take heed to what JB tried to do. He built us up so we could respect and feel better about each other and ourselves.

Comment: hey everyone I would like to say that my heart goes out to the friends and family of the legendary Mister James Brown. Not to take anything away from him, there is an issue that I thought alot of you might be concerned about. There is a web site mediatakeout.com that has an article about how baltimore police is trying to forbid black women from wearing braids or locks. There is a petition that can be signed. I think we all need to go there and petition against this and try to overturn this decision. I am once again greatly sorry that I had to post this in this column and not only about Mister James Brown I am suprised that eurweb.com did not post this article once again sorry but please check it out this totally goes against all human rights. thank You eur peeps.

Therefore, their "marriage" was illegal, Tomi Rae Hynie (his partner) and James Brown never married again. Although they have a 5 year old son together. She was not allowed to enter his home and has been denied his estate.

Comment: Brown's Widow Locked Out of Home AP ATLANTA (Dec. 26) - James Brown 's lawyer said Tuesday that the late singer and his partner were not legally married and that she was locked out of his South Carolina home for estate legal reasons. It's not a reflection on her as an individual," lawyer Buddy Dallas told The Associated Press. "I have not even been in the house, nor will I until appropriate protocol is followed." Brown's partner, backup singer Tomi Rae Hynie, was already married to a Texas man in 2001 when she married Brown, thus making her marriage to Brown null, Dallas said. He said Hynie later annulled the previous marriage, but she and Brown never remarried. "I suppose it would mean she was, from time to time, a guest in Mr. Brown's home," Dallas said. On Monday, after the 73-year-old "Godfather of Soul" died at an Atlanta hospital, Hynie, 36, found the gates to Brown's Beech Island, S.C., home padlocked and said she was denied access. Hynie argued that she has a legal right to live in the home with the couple's 5-year-old son.

Comment: "This is my home," Hynie told a reporter outside the house. "I don't have any money. I don't have anywhere to go." Dallas said legal formalities need to be followed now, adding that Brown's estate was left in trust for his children. He declined to elaborate on Brown's final instructions. "It's not intended and I hope not interpreted to be an act of unkindness or an act of a lack of sympathy," Dallas said. "Ms. Hynie has a home a few blocks away from Mr. Brown's home where she resides periodically when she is not with Mr. Brown. She is not without housing or home." Dallas said Brown and Hynie had not seen each other for several weeks before his death. The couple had had a sometimes tumultuous relationship. Brown pleaded guilty in 2004 to a domestic violence charge stemming from an argument with Hynie and was let off with a $1,087 fine. He was accused of pushing Hynie to the floor at the home and threatening to kill her. Hynie could not be reached Tuesday for further comment. A lawyer who has represented her in the past, Robert Rosen, was out of the country and could not be reached, according to a receptionist in his Charleston, S.C., office. Hynie's cell phone wasn't accepting incoming messages Tuesday, but had an outgoing message that said in part, "James, if this is you, I'm in a meeting and I will call you back when I get out. Thank you so much for calling. Happy holidays." Brown, whose classic singles included "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" and "I Got You (I Feel Good)," died of heart failure less than two days after he had been hospitalized with pneumonia, his agent said. Funeral details had not been set Tuesday morning.

Comment: I'm glad that he left his estate to his children. Looks like he had his affairs in order. My initial reaction was damn that's cold, but if she has a home near by and they hadn't seen each other in weeks and considering that he had been ill for several days and she was not by his side, I think the lawyers did the right thing. Old girl probably plan to walz up in there and get her hands on some stuff before the adult children could.

Comment: I know I'm late posting...due to the holidays but I had to post. Sypathies to the family, friends and fans. Again, we've lost a legend. James Brown was an innovator, creator, visonary, singer/dancer/bandleader/vocal arranger/director and I probably could add more slashes. I thank him for the music, the dancing, the showmanship. James ran a tight ship. If you messed up with the music or the vocals...that was a fine. He deifinitely didn't play when it came to the band. They were always tight with the arrangments. I especially thank him for the Funk. Since I think the b%*$ is my favorite instrument, I realized years ago, that James introduced me and the world to the b%*$ being the melody instead of enhancing the melody. He truly earned being nicknamed "The Hardest Working Man In Show Business". He led the way for Hip Hop, Disco and Rap. You can now rest King James. That heavenly choir just got Funky!!!!
