Comment: It would be nice to know how much the movies made since it didn't reach the '100 million' mark so we CAN do the math..

Name: Willie1986
Comment: Diary of a Mad Black Woman grossed $50,633,099 on a $5.5 million budget and Madea's Family Reunion grossed $63,257,940 on a $6 million budget.

Name: missgee
Comment: Keep up the good work Tyler, we need a voice in hollywood to represent our culture. Maybe we can get some real family entertain made and not the crap their putting out and forcing down our throats.

Name: ChocolateBrownGa1
Comment: Good info Willie. Now I can do the math.

Name: nycGYRL888
Comment: Yeah Willie thanks...cause I sure was thinking the same thing. How much did they make! Tyler is a smart business man. From where he came from to where he is now: Homeless to High Rollin'...only God good turn that around! I am proud of him and his accomplishments. Loved the movies, loved the plays...took a minute for me to catch onto this TV show of his...but, by the end of the 2 weeks he aired it (with his own money no less)...I was starting to love it to. Can't wait for the fall line up. Keep doing your thang Tyler. Movie & TV execs weren't expecting black folks to be that supportive of your work...glad to see you prove their a$$es wrong! We must all realize just how powerful the "black dollar" is...and become wise about who & what we choose to support!

Comment: Congrats to Mr. Perry.

Name: sultry
Comment: why in the hell does it have to be said that Tyler Perry secretly runs hollywood. What's the %*$!(@! secret, it he beat out your so called high roller in hollywood then just say it instead of saying secretly runs hollywood. Just give a successful black man or woman their just due props and congratulate them. Dang! is that so hard to do? Go on Tyler do the damn thang and keep on doing what you do because I for one got your back and will support you in all of your projects. A fan forever, sultry

Name: RyTay27
Comment: I ain't mad at cha' Tyler.....Get that money...Madea Goes to Jail was hilarious!!!!!

Name: ImJustAsking
Comment: Rytay< Madea goes to jail was hilarious, the best play yet IMO. Love the plays, hate the movies. But there is obviously an audience for them. I watched all the episodes of Tyler's TV show and I thought it was a burning hot mess...although it felt good to see blacks on TV who I could identify with. On the other hand, the plots were rushed and unbelievable, the storylines didn't have focus, and the dialogue was horrible. The father is the only thing that made the show watchable. I'm all for supporting blacks but not at the cost of quality.

Name: ss69054
Comment: Kudos to Tyler Perry. This just goes to show that u never underestimate the Black Dollar. Ha, ha, ha!!!

Name: khufu
Comment: well first of all, BLACK FOLKS AS AUDIENCE HAVE ALWAYS "RUN" HOLLYWOOD"...and if your read the history, anytime Hollywood has been in a slump, Black cinema has saved its azz...we WE just dont truly understand our power in the box office.....

Name: khufu
Comment: HOUSE OF PAIN was terrible! Terrible! Only thing that worked for me was the little boy and the set. Outside of that it was terrible! The casting was bad...the show could have worked if Tyler had let some other folks write and direct...and here is what I have been wondering: who did the casting? Surely, I do not believe that Rueben Cannon did the casting.....

Name: khufu
Comment: Now let's see how much power TP has or how much THEY are willing to give him: lwet TP start producing some other concepts and scripts...better quality....let's see what happens....

Name: khufu
Comment: ss69054 RIGHTON! write on! But see THEY will never tell you that the true ower is with the people...I mean, THE AUDIENCE...Thesee, if we think it's all about TP, then we miss the point....they always make us think the power is in the ONE PERSON and not the collective.....such a wonderfully successful strategy that keep using over and over and over and over......

Name: Smokie1
Comment: Tyler does not secretely run Hollywood. Those WB execs are not going to allow that to happen. Tyler just needs to keep doing what he is doind regardless to what type of label they are trying to put on him. Don't get caught up in the labels cause that is the enemies way of bringing a person down. Keep up the good work Tyler and at the same time watch your back.

Name: McNasty
Comment: I love this brother and the fact that in spite of the sit on your butt naysayers this brother puts other black folk to work. He makes his movies for under 10 mil and can afford to keep making them for that cause he can afford to back his own shat up. When you can do that you don't have time to sit around complaining about what somebody else is doing - people are working cause of this brother.

Name: khufu
Comment: MCNASTY again you MISS THE POINT....

Name: khufu
Comment: we all love the brother and the fact that he is creating jobs and wealth for some folks.....not that we have gotten past that CAN WE CRITIQUE the artistic, social, cultural and historical value OF THE WORK? and yes, the econimic significance and impact of THE WORK on the Hollywood economic sub-structure...?

Name: khufu
Comment: economic

Name: McNasty
Comment: Khufu you miss the point! While Tyler is putting together projects that have enough pull that he doesn't have to be a puppet as so many other blacks are you're on this board 'critiquing' his projects. Get your thumbs out your butt and ears and do something on/of your damn own and then come back and talk to this sistah here.

Name: khufu
Comment: MCNASTY Im sorry should we be blindly kissing TP azz like you? SHould we agree with him ideologically and artistically simply because he is Black and making money? Is that what the great McNasty is advocating? Where is there room in your perspective for agreeing disareeably? Let me get this right then according to your logic: SUperHead is cool because she is tellig the untold stories of a lotta sistahs? Where is the value analysis in your perpective McNAsty? Tyler Perry's work is sub-par. I am glad he is making the cash...am i glad that he puts buffon characters on the stage and on the screen? No...not saying all them are buffons--but you SHOULD get my point...Oh I have some concepts and scripts for him...let's see if he is open to quality stories that can make money.......

Name: gingerg
Comment: Tyler Perry is making inroads in Hollywood and I applaud that. He has opened doors to other opportuntities for actors/actresses that were not previously available to them. I especially liked the two sisters in the movie version of Madea's Family Reunion. I had never seen them in anything before and both sisters can really act. Then, there's Kimberly Elise, who will one day win an Oscar in a fashion that we can all be proud of. As time goes on, you will see continuous improvement in the artistic quality and range of his work. This is only the beginning and he deserves our support.

Name: golfebj
Comment: "I'm rich @#$%! Ha!" (Tyler Perry in a Dave Chappelle voice)

Name: MidtownATL
Comment: I commend Tyler Perry! Big UPS to Tyler. I agree with gingerg 100%. He has the ability to keep some of our black actors gainfully employed who the industry has completely ignored. I am certain that there are many African American actors who have had to seek other/additional employment because they had not received "the call." We need about one hundred more Tyler Perrys!!!!

Name: DCGG
Comment: Fuvk Tyler Perry - he reminds me of one of these got damn preachers that take negros money every Sunday, live lavish while them mofos strugglin...what da fuvk has he done for black folks - oh yeah put out a few stoopid %*$ sterotypical negra movies with him in drag and negros although financiall fuvked up compared to everybody else made him a millionaire several times over...I hate this fuvkin coon!

Name: ladybyrd
Comment: Hip Hop Video's are putting black females to work...But is that a good thing??

Name: khufu
Comment: MidtownATL scary and dealy thought...100 more tyler perry's...spoken like a true southern negro! LOL

Name: khufu
Comment: that's "deadly"

Comment: Some people have some serious emotional problems.

Name: rayne
Comment: Whether you like TP or not, the brother is laughing all the way to the bank. One other thing, he has donated money to the Katrina victims....Praise God!

Name: PgDn
Comment: As I've gotten older I've learned to appreciate the fact that there is room for several approaches to success and that everyone has their role to play in the larger drama of life. TP's movies are of poor quality and present the same ole jokes and "characters" that we've been familiar with in the AA community for years. (Try reading the recently released bigography about Stephin Fetchit to see just how long these images have been around) What's new now is that an AA can now produce the entire farce from top to bottom without begging white people for the money to finance the project. That fact is great. And if by chance TP gives light/employment to one or two or ten actors, or behind the scene directors, hair dressers, costume designers, camera technicians, etc. who go on to become Academy Award winners some day then that is wonderful too. I don't support the quality of his projects but I support the idea that he is out there making his dream of making movies and other forms of entertainment a reality. And after all, don't we all live to make our dreams a reality?

Name: EdnaMae
Comment: I sure hope he keeps playing the Madea role, because, that is what sells his movies. It will be very, very interesting to see how his next movie turns out without that charachter.

Name: khufu
Comment: RAYNE so as long as you gettin paid then fukk how you get paid right? No beter yet..let me see....if I rip off 50 people in the 'hood, I can go out and give 100 thousand dollars to 59 people and PRAISE THE LAWD...all is okay! Better yet, I can sell drugs monday thru friday and go to church saturday or sunday and drop several thusand in the plate and all is okay

Name: khufu
Comment: EdnaMae and..........? so that's okay to project Homosexuality and transvestitism (is that even a word?) because it's what people want?

Name: khufu
Comment: PgDn Yes suh! We can know demonize and degrade ourselves! We dont need whitey to tel us we buffons--we can do it ourselves! I dont need no cracker to tell me I am a nigguh--I can do it on my own and pay others for doin' it.....

Name: McNasty
Comment: Khufu you need to spend more time trying to figure out why you hang on this board like it's your girlfriend trying to get everybody to think the convoluted thoughts you think. You don't know a damned thing about me and all your ideology and advocating, save it for someone who cares what you think. You need to stop smoking all that crack it's cooked what little brain you had. WHERE IN THE FUKK DOES SUPERHEAD COME IN? Khufu grow the fukk up and if you want to know what I think just ask it's obvious you can barely think for yourdamnself.

Name: McNasty
Comment: Cosign PgDn - explain that again slowly to that funky azz khufu!

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: PG..while I understand what you're tryin to say, I wonder is that "as long as they're employing blacks" idea consistent? The infamous 3 6 Mafia performance employed black dancers/actors yet some of us villified them. That song, "It's hard out there for a pimp" was from a movie that employed many blacks. I'm assuming you and others who agree w/u believe that the movie/performance was a step forward because they "employed blacks?" I mean they did win an Oscar. Wendy Williams is the reason that blacks are employed. Death Row was the reason blacks were employed. Being BB was the reason blacks were employed...Just wondering..

Name: MidtownATL
Comment: 100 more tyler perry's...spoken like a true southern negro! LOL I did not mean LITERALLY! What this true southern negro meant is that we need 100 more people of Tyler Perry's caliber that have the means and the ability to employ a lot of the our people in the Industry.

Name: dakoolestkat
Comment: khufu...earlier you stated that TP is promoting homosexuality..when exactly has he done that? I dont recall anyone saying that when Flip Wilson was doing drag comedy...nah I mean?

Name: ImJustAsking
Comment: If we have that attitude that we will support black projects no matter the quality then the media will continue to feed us any garbage. I think we deserve better than that.

Name: gingerg
Comment: Hold on, now.... I support hiring black for projects as well as advancement. However, the 36 Mafia thing was too much. They were a disgrace on the Oscars and should not have won anything. It the the low point of an otherwise decent evening. The video ho images are despicable, too. I'm so glad BET finally had the sense to cancel Uncut. I support movies, etc. that reflect us in a positive light. I don't support stereotypical stage plays or anything else in which characters are basically modern day minstrels. And I must admit that the sight of Tyler Perry in the Madea costumes unnerves me sometimes if I take it as anything more than light comedy. In my city, folks will pay $75 to see a traveling stage play, but won't spend $10 on thought-provoking work by local black artists.

Name: gingerg
Comment: I enjoy works like Eve's Bayou, Akeela and the Bee as well as the works of literary greats like Alice Walker, August Wilson, Gloria Naylor, J. California Cooper and Pearl Cleage. More of their works should be made into films. If only we would lend our support.....

Name: ss69054
Comment: gingerg> I'm feeling you. Although, I admire TP's work but we do need to be more diverse. We always complain about how folks stereotype us and think we are all poor, dumb and illiterate, dope dealers, prostitutes, etc. Well, part of that is from the media but if we can get away from just the Hood, Chicken n Chitlin movies and provide more quality movies that would be good. I guess we are our own worst critics at time. Can't satisfy everybody.

Name: ladylove
Comment: of course he makes all the money. he plays all 50 characters in his movies!

Name: FineBrown
Comment: ..so if the studio won't take your film--and you produce it yourself...you get to keep the money..right?

Name: nycGYRL888
Comment: As >>ss69054>> just stated, you can't please everybody! Waaay to much energy is being spent disecting every little thing in the industry. The way I see it...different strokes for different folks. When yuo go to see anything by Tyler Perry you know going in...your gonna laugh and your gonna cry that's what you paid YOUR money for! If you want depictions of love stories, plantation movies, drama, action, whatever fills you for the moment...then go check that out! Not everything black folks do has to be for the "upliftment" of our people in music, movies, tv, etc. Can we just have some fun? Laugh at ourselves? Let back and cut lose without being reminded of our EVERYDAY struggles. I thought the purpose of being creative was to use your imagination to take you some place on a different level. To use your creative juices for whatever your heart desires! Tyler is not trying to reinvent the dammm wheel...he is simply trying to bring about entertainment in HIS way! Since so many on this board are so quick to judge, criticize and demean his work...I'd like to see you do what he's done...with YOUR own money! We need to stop trying to beat and break one another down and start supporting one another. What TP is doing, so many of us just wish for one second we could be the one behind that Madea drag cashing his check at the end of the day! He11...I know I do!

Name: Angel_of_Soul
Comment: I think that sometimes we get so caught up in what we don't like about something until we miss the message. Everyone of TP's plays has a message. They are often of love, forgiveness, how to treat someone. He has a love of women and how women are treated. Yeah, he portrays a woman, but it's a culmination of people from his family. So, who else could do that? Remember his first play was done on his own money and he was broke, so he had to be Madea, he couldnt afford anyone else. After that, I believe it would have lost its appeal if someone else would have taken over the role. I'm really proud of TP cuz he made something out of nothing. He does keep black folk employed on the stage as well as in the cinema. I don't agree it's a minstrel show. If that's the case, every gospel play is that. He found his niche, BRAVO and kudos to him! At some point, we have to be proud of our own for what we accomplish and not downplay it. It's why we are at the bottom of the totem pole now. Be happy for him and support him. He keeps God first in what he does, that's why he's where he is. There is a difference between being a drag queen and playing a role. I don't know any drags, but they become what they feel like they want to be. He is playing a role. Richard Pryor did it, Clevon Little did it, and we certainly can't forget Flip Wilson. Support your folks, don't drag em down. If they're doing something POSITIVE, support them. Blessings

Name: Gemami
Comment: DCGG, I was thinking the same thing. Sorry, Soul, but the message is displaced when there's a gun-touting foul mouth grandMANmie as the lead charcter. I personally would have like Diary without the Medea character. However, now that Perry has a foot in Hollywood nows the time for him to produce better material. I for a fan of the the person who does the Trios series -- now those are good films -- always an interest storyline and not over the top.

Name: ImJustAsking
Comment: Gemami< I was with you (sort of) until you brought up Tois. I'm sorry, but my grandma ain't watching Trois. LMAO! The people who made the madea plays famous are churchgoers.

Name: nycGYRL888
Comment: Well stated Angel_of_Soul. Unfortunately some will still miss the point. God is truly behind TP's work and what he's been able to do not only for himself but for the black community as a whole. He's made more contributions to worthwhile organizations and causes besides Katrina victims. Yes, this all began with him dressing a a "gun-touting grandMANmie" but its much bigger than that now! Madea was his "in". He used what he knew to get him to the level he is at now. More films are in the works for him and personally both movies (IMO) were great. So great (in fact)...I paid MY money twice to see both of them (with no regrets)! All I can say is if anyone has any better ideas that can actually be produced...then make us aware of them. Bring your vision to the big screen or the small screen. Show all of us (including) TP just how it should be done!

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: NYC...I think u miss the point that we should be able to critique the lack of artistic integrity in his work while championing his ability to do so. We really can do both. I don't agree w/Oprah at all time BUT I'm behind her success 100%. As was stated, Tyler tapped into the church folk. That's where I big market it. These same plays have been going on for decades do the structure hasn't changed. I've seen the play and the entire cast are sub-par performers. BUT, that's been the case w/most chitlin circuit plays. It is what it is...

Name: bigheadbull2
Comment: LOL@msnasty

Name: gingerg
Comment: Tyler Perry tapped into his audience in much the same way that T.D. Jakes has. Their interests/needs were largely ignored by the mainstream. The door was open and he wisely walked through it at the right time. Now, he can do what he wants in terms of writing, directing and producing. By the way, whatever happened to Robert Townsend?

Name: PgDn
Comment: Musb... I still think there is room out there for different points of veiw and ways to accomplish a goal. TP has his audience as does Spike Lee and there lots of folks who dig 36 Mafia instead of India Arie. There are different tastes within the AA community. We need to be concerned about how we raise our children. Volunteer at your local urban school, visit our AA old folks at a nursing home, visit someone in prison - start doing something in our community for our kids, elders and incarcerated. Changing our reality is what will make a difference in how we are portrayed in the media (entertainment or news). Anyway it's all on a continum and is all relative is what I've concluded. Currently reading a new biography of Jim Hendrix and it was the same type of complaint then. Articles from media of the time referred to him as a "superspade" and "Wildman of Borneo" Most AA of the time didn't like his music or style but some did. Now he is recognized as a musical genius and when a history of rock-n-roll is written we all want to make sure that this black man is mentioned and not overlooked.

Name: nycGYRL888
Comment: musbdherbs...I don't disagree with one voicing their opinion about the work that he's done. My argument comes into play when "we" take things to a level as if someone with the financial where-withall now has to "free" our people (in more ways then one)! Tyler has his way of presenting his vision, Steven Speilberg has his way, Spike Lee has his way...so on and so forth. Everytime a black person does something for some reason people seem to take it as if they are speaking for the entire race! This is mere entertainment and should be looked upon as such. I for one want to take something away from any movie/play that I see and Tyler has been able to deliver his message thru the screen & on stage to myself and to millions. I believe that's what really matters. As you said, we have the right to critique him and champion him at the same time...but some on this board are simply trying to crucify his work and that's just wrong. Now that Tyler has his "in" I am sure more actors/actresses of a higher caliber will be seen in his works...One must not forget that they cost money. I liked the fact that he had cast 2 women (the sisters in family reunion movie) that are virtual unknowns. I get tired of seeing Vivica, Nia & Gabrielle in all th black films. I want to see some new faces get their foot in the door. Someone in Tyler's position can make that happen.

Name: musbdherbs
Comment: PG...of course there is. You won't find disagreement w/me on that one. That is y I said I champion his success. I was not at the least offended by 36's performance nor am I offended by Perry. Both of them appeal to an audience. It may not be "my" cup of tea. But, I won't knock someone because they drink there's a little stronger than mine. Hell I like my food (greens, cabbage etc.) cooked for at least 1.5 hours. BUT, there are those who'll say it shouldn't cook that long. Cook it your way..I'll cook it minezez.. In short, to each his/her own..just be consistent is all I ask. As hard as that may be...lol

Name: khufu
Comment: McNasty LOL the fact that you respond to me means you care....check that!

Name: khufu
Comment: MidtownATL LOL from another SOuthern engro here..okay I agree with that LOL

Name: Gemami
Comment: ImJustAsking, you're right Trios is very racy and for a discriminating audience, but as far in originality and quality it is far above these Madea movies. As 'Herbs said, I respect what he's doing and give him props and do agree that there's room for every sort of movie but for me these Madea movies are no different than the nonsense that the Waynan Bros. put out.

Name: gingerg
Comment: 36 Mafia was bouncing around the stage like a bunch of goons with those grills, baggy clothes and so on. It was pitiful. To each his/her own, but the Ocsars was not an appropriate setting for such a performance. To make matters worse, everyone else is sitting there in tuxes, gowns and so on. Their "outfits" were what they wore on stage!!

Name: adifferentpath
Comment: khufu, I usually like your comments. Please cease with the southern negro comments. Frankly, when you make them you begin to unravel the very points you're usually try to make and at the same time;give in to the divide and conquer mentality. depending on what history you believe, all us "negros" are from the South as the point of entry into the U.S. The belittling of the South as synonomous (sp?) with stupidty ticks me off. I don't understand why we do it, but hey! You're not coming across as the intelligent Black person you are, who is usually on the educational tip. Peace to you.

Name: LynetteG
Comment: I loved House of Payne. We need to stop being so critical of our own shows and let them make it. Sometimes, well most of the time, we are our own worst enemies. Why be so cynical. You go Tyler...keep making that paper!

Name: MrsPhoenix
Comment: Tyler Perry has a lot of potential (financially and otherwise) now to make POSITIVE films with POSITIVE Black males as the subject. This is what is needed...now more than ever b4.

Name: leodee836
Comment: Khufu u r being childish as hell !!! All u had to do was say u didnt like the show but u tryin 2 get everybody else 2 feel the same way u do. Tyler Perry is doing a very good job at everything he is doing. I would like 2 see u do half of the stuff that he has done. Everything that he has done has brought forth a message. If u didnt understand the message then thats your dumb azz fault. Stop trying 2 get other people 2 think like u think. While u sittin here talikin bout TP his is going on with his day doing what God told him 2 do and not worryin about all these dumb azz hataz on this message board. U only wish that u can do the things that he is doing. Thats why u being a hata now. As long as he is doing what God told him 2 I will continue 2 support him in everything he does.
