Comment: We've got the knowledge, the resources the numbers, the finances and the absolute ability to add on to the nunber of black owned black operated stations. This shouldn't be an issue with us at this point. We've got to get past expecting 'them' to share and create and build our own.

Comment: Oh boy...FIRST..., you'd think the NAACP would have it's own programming by now..a news/public affairs programming maybe? SECONDLY...The NAACP IMAGE AWARDS needs to be re-vamped seriously or cancelled...THIRD....I hope they will do something MORE than just issuing a report that re-states what we all know which is: Hollywood is racist and we need to be producing our own programming and developing our own distribution channels (just look at the SPanish speaking TV stations--where are ours?)FOURTH: there were some programs that were cancelled that needed to be cancelled and FIFTH: I hope they (the NAACP) will be equally vocal about the content of Black programs and not be content with Black faces in other words, they need(ed) to be concerned about quality and not just quantity......

Comment: To khufu - I agree and second your comments. It's interesting how the NAACP are the first to point fingers, but what are they doing to resolve the problem? As you said, Hispanics have come up with their own network (Telemundo). I like TVOne, but BET has scraped the bottom of the barrel. (Okay, at least their awards show has stepped up a little in the past few years.) But since Viacom has taken over, there is really no excuse as to why they cannot air any new/original programming, other than the "garbage" they currently air. So maybe it's time for the NAACP to step up or shut up.

Comment: WTF, there are many more important issues going on. Who cares about what actors are on TV? Outsourcing, unemployment, lack of summer jobs for youth, poverty, AIDS. The NAACP has lost their way. This is why I refuse to give them money. I could care less about more pampered entertainers.

Comment: We need our own network and not one that will only air videos and re-runs of black shows. We need a network that will showcase legendary talent as well as new and modern talent. Something that is culturally satisfying for the slightly older generation. Not a network that you will have to have cable in order to see. The networks that are around now see more money in reality TV (which BTW is not a reality for most of us) and YT teenage dramas. Someone, anyone, step up to the plate and create something that is in the words of the 4 gentlemen that started their very own clothes line For Us By Us.

Comment: we need our own production companies (like Harpo) and our own distribution channels i.e. cinemas, tv stations, cable channels, syndicators (like King World) retailers (Blockbuster, etc), wholesalers (Time Warner Video Distribution)...everybody wants to be in front of the camera or writing/directing...we need money folks to invest in the production of ideas and the means through which to get the products in/on the market......Now, did Kwesi Mifume produce a talk show while he was over the NAACP?

Comment: I think this is one of the low man on the totem pole type issues in our community. Heck, we watch too much tv as a group anyway. Lets focus on more important and pressing issues like the typical big four issues : education, teenage pregnancy, growth of Aids amongst AAs, and economic development. We can worry about what is on tv later.

Comment: NAACP = National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, Please tell me how more faces are going to help? There are so many other issues of a greater importance facing the black community. Unemployment, Healthcare, poor Education system for Inner city children, drug abuse, unemployment, higher taxes, less tax breaks, unemployment, murders, street pharmacists, fair government representation or BTW did I mention UNEMPLOYMENT.
Please lets concentrate on the TRUE ADVANCEMENT OF COLORED PEOPLE....MORE TELEVISIONS SHOWS, ALTHOUGH A NICE THOUGHT....WILL NOT GET THE JOB DONE

Comment: >>dutches150 You are so right. UPN is history and so are most of the black shows they provided. BET is horrible, I'm in Western NY so TV One is not available to us here. I do not subscribe to cable, but why should I have to accumulate an additional bill to get programming that I'm interested in? Television IS SUCH a non-issue

Comment: khufu..r u suggesting that as a whole, the NAACP is useless OR do u just have issues w/"some" of the things they've done. FYI, most organizations that monitor civil rights issues often report the same statistics. If this is some'n that is not on the forefront of what our issues are (as if we have only 4 or 5), then what's the harm in the report? Keep in mind, this is a report from the HOLLYWOOD bureau. It's only an analysis.

Comment: Well we have HOUSE OF PAYNE...everyone loved Madea now didn't you? Now we have Tyler Perry's new sitcom be aired in Maryland with LOTS of stereotypes of working class blacks to feed the American public's poor image of us. Ebonics slinging, way out of shape, drug addicted, gossiping, putting each other down...So qwit worrying! Whatever happen to a copy cat of The Cosby Show? Doesn't anyone want to do a modern remake for the new millenium? Unified blacks WITH real problems but SOLUTIONS!

Comment: Pamal...while you are correct in your analysis let's NEVER underestimate the POWER of television. You are aware of the education problem, well WE don't READ books (newspapers or mags) more often we rely on TV for our news, etc. IF our youth are PRONED to WATCH videos and DVDs and mimic, WHY NOT give them a POSITIVE image to portray. Many times it is NOT SEEING folk like us in OTHER ROLES that induce the thought--I guess EVERYONE is just like me. POSITIVITY through the media is not a stone we should not turn. Hurl it in a direction to BREAK DOWN negativity. The approach needs to be REALISTIC using what we have and what we KNOW works. THEN MAYBE we can get all la de da.

Comment: Folk aren't going to stop watching tv no matter what, for some it's an escape and others the only form of entertainment they can afford. Quality programming on Black owned Black operated stations on national tv is a priority albeit a low one. If folk aren't reading or don't have access to certain programming having national tv stations will fill in the gap. To ask that we stop watching tv is like asking us to quit eating chicken.

Comment: Khufu..there are a myriad of issues that the NAACP is working on. Did you know that they recently signed on their commitment to the National Black Aids Movement? I don't remember when but I know that they have. I'm sure it's on their website somewhere. My point in asking that question is that whenever there is any news on what the NAACP has done, the immediate reaction from people is negative. This is before they even know anything about the subject matter. W/that sort of preconceived negativity, it's hard to sort out the good vs. the bad. It's somewhat the same argument u give about Cosby, yes they have had problems but it shouldn't be argued what they are most concerned about AND what they are attempting to do. They have some work to do absolutely. But, can u name any civil rights organization that is reputable? Unfortunately, many people see the role of the NAACP as marginal but they do more good than bad. Just as w/Cosby.

Comment: Khufu..we can argue all day about what the NAACP hasn't done. Factually, they will never do enough to satisfy critics. They want to focus on AIDS, why not Katrina. They want to focus on minority representation in TV...why not healthcare. Again, I direct you to their website because I don't know all of what they have/haven't done. BUT, the website will tell you just that. My question to you is who is able to lead and what civil rights organization can u name that meets ur criteria? Consistently wailing the woe's of what we currently have...when there is nothing else..leaves us w/what. Nothing but talk. I have issues w/the black church but I can't say they are useless. I have issues w/Al but I can't say he's useless. Same w/Cosby..I can't say he's useless because I don't agree w/some of the things that he says. The ends can't justify the means here. Either we try to deal w/what we have or stop complaining about what we don't. I live in DC and they have started a year-long series on "being a black man" Of all the people that I know...maybe 2 or 3 have read the articles. Let's tackle our complacency and disinterest in things concerning US. THAT is not a NAACP issue..it is an OUR issue. IF we don't think NAACP is effective..then let's stop looking to them to solve our problems. This is my approach as I try not to let me "preconceptions" about things to dictate how I approach individual challenges. This is something that I believe keeps us down.

Comment: I have been hosting a local Access TV Show for the past 4 years right here in Austin, TX, and I am a member of the NAACP, but I get no support from the Black Community because of jealousy, and I talk about some real strong and pressing issues. I was instrumental in helping expose a white female police officer who shot and killed a young latino in the back at point blank range. I also, exposed the corruption of APD officers who have killed blacks in Austin, TX, but no help from the Black Community. I have been doing this alone. Nelson Linder has been on my Access TV Show before.
